Abby's Odyssey: In Defense of the Sunderlands (Should they be blamed for this dangerous adventure?)

Abby Sunderland's recent adventure has everyone questioning teen safety. It all depends one how one defines it. Parents, where are your teenage daughters? They had better be "safe" at home watching the perverse antics of Disney role models like Miley Cyrus or Lindsay Lohan on TV. Perhaps they're "safe" at school, where they are being educated about the sexual revolution, and in some states, being ushered "safely" by administrators to a clinic where the abortion procedure will be administered with you parents none the wiser. At the very worst, one can rest assured that even if America's daughters have ventured...

What are Your Favorite Adventure Books Part II

A few weeks ago I posted a thread asking what adventure books FReepers thought were their favorites. I was looking for ideas for books to read while on business travel. Many suggested Louis L'Amore "Last of the Breed" a story of a US Air Force test pilot of partial Native American Indian descent who is forced down and captured by the USSR and held in Siberia. He escapes and struggles to survive through the winter as he tries to escape. An excellent read!

Teen Sailor Nears End of Round-the-World Solo Voyage

Like a lot of 17-year -olds, Zac Sunderland can get a bit tongue-tied at times. Only for Sunderland, it's not on account of hormones or nerves. "I've been out at sea for a long time," says Sunderland, who has nearly reached his goal of becoming the youngest sailor to single-handedly circumnavigate the earth in a sailboat. "You kinda forget how to talk. Sometimes I'll get into a port and it'll take a week before the words I'm wanting to say can come out of my mouth the right way. It's annoying." Sunderland, who has yet to get his driver's license,...

COULD HE BE THE YOUNGEST SOLO CIRCUMNAVIGATOR?

Zac Sunderland is attempting to be the youngest person in history to sail around the world alone. Though the goal is simple, achieving it is not. Man has tested himself against this task for over 500 hundred years. ...Zac is 17 years old, and he is growing up in Southern California. A year and a half ago, he had a dream to sail around the world. It would have been easy to dismiss such a far fetched fantasy, but Zac took his own money,...

Road Fest, Leg Two: Beth, and the Entrance to Nowhere

Day two, 0500: I had not slept so well and so deeply in years. It was the kind of deep and dreamless Rip van Winkle sleep from which one awakens with the impression that no time had passed at all. The first objective data to the contrary was presented by the merciless blaring of the alarm clock in my hotel room. My eyes snapped open and I fumbled hastily across the unfamiliar, darkened room with a single-minded determination to stop that damned bleating instrument of chaos and evil. It was during this effort that I encountered the second (and far...

60Gunner's High-Test Road Fest, Part 1: Outbound

I rose in the very early morning for my much-anticipated trip to San Diego with a sense of excitement and my three good companions: A cooler full of snack, my souped-up 2007 Ford Mustang named Baby-san, and the open road. Fully-prepped for the trip, waxed, and buffed until her fireglow scarlet paint took on a fathomless gleam, Baby-san communicated her eagerness to boogie with a throaty, crackling snarl as I fired her up and blipped the accelerator. I throttled up, released the clutch and let 320 horses out of the corral. With a saucy chirp from the Pirellis, we lunged...
